Dangers and Safe Practices When Posting Online

With all the social networking sites available online, such a Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, people can post and share whatever they would like with other people online. Many people post personal information and pictures of themselves on a daily basis. What people often forget is the dangers and risks they are putting on themselves from posting pictures and personal information online. Teenagers and young adults will sometimes post pictures of themselves drunk at a party or a picture of them showing risky behaviour. These pictures can be exploited by other people such as friends or enemies of the person, or they could end up on other sites. Also, any of these pictures can be saved by screen-shot so it can get out even if you have strict privacy settings on your Facebook account. If personal information such as where you live, your full name and date of birth is available with photos, someone could use this information to stalk you or even steal your identity and use it on another site. With the recent rise in social networking, employers have began looking up their applicants online. Many people get rejected a job because of their opinions and pictures posted on Facebook.
To prevent having any of this happen, be choosey with what you post online. Pictures should be selected carefully, and if party pictures are being posted be sure to have good privacy settings on them or don't post them at all. When posting personal information, don't include every detail and if you really don't want your info out worldwide, use a different name and birthdate.
Social Networking can be fun and is a great way to stay in touch with people, but always be sure to know the dangers that you face when posting anything online. Always follow safe precautions to ensure that you will be safer and less likely to risk your real life from your online life.

  1. Great list of dangers and precautions mentioned above. It is important to be careful with what you post and to stop and think twice before posting certain things on line. Thanks for the reminder to always be cautious!

  2. Good points- especially the one about how others are capable of saving any photos that you post online, and using them for whatever they choose to!
It is definitely true that people should be more "choosey" with which websites they decide to view/ join.
Good blog- thanks for the tips :)
